Happiness and Hardships
Ever since I entered high school, I had a very simple goal that I wanted to achieve in the future: I want to be happy with a stable living for myself surrounded by loved ones. With that goal, I did not think it would be hard to achieve at all, how hard could it be to base a goal on three simple factors? Ultimately, I did not realize how hard of a goal this is to achieve. This goal seemed feasible in my Freshman and Sophomore years, even with Sophomore year being three times more harder than Freshman year with me taking my first ever AP class, that being AP United States Government & Politics. But with Junior year, this whole pursuit for happiness has grown more and more as the school year has gone on.
Most of the time in Junior year I either feel stressed, exhausted, dejected, and frustrated, emotions that I rarely ever experienced during my first two years in high school. The more I think about the way I have been feeling this school year, the more I realize that I have always felt like this. Junior year has taught me that I was truly never happy. I have experienced moments where I was smiling and laughing, but it is all joy to me, not happiness. It is increasingly difficult to cultivate this happiness, considering how competitive my school is when it comes to everything. The environment takes a toll, leading to a negative perception of myself as the environment has gotten more “hostile.” Most of my peers are acing all their tests and getting 1500+ on the SAT. It makes me wonder about my value in society and question how I would be able to get my dream occupation of being a psychologist and checking off the factor of a stable living.
In school, I would not consider most people as loved ones except a select few and even then, I am unsure if they feel the same way about me. This is mainly due to the fact I have a lot of friends at school, which in turn, makes other people question their value and how I perceive them. Even then, the majority of my closest friends go to a different school than me. I have met some of their friends and they are all nice, fun people to be around. With that being said, I have this big fear looming over me that my value to them will depreciate as time goes on as they get closer to their friends, hurting my idea of having them as my loved ones. I am still able to see them at least for now, weekly at the University of Maryland as we all have an internship there, focused on cultivating happiness in yourself and in others. As that internship has been going on along with the school year, it has made me realize that I do not need other people to necessarily be happy. People come and go all the time, so my happiness should not be based on them, an idea that the internship also supports. With the internship cultivating my ideas about it, I believe happiness is being able to feel calm and excited about life, no matter what may try to defer your mindset. This is truly why I was not feeling happy, I put too much of my happiness into other people rather than trying to access and create the happiness that is within me. Everyone is not always going to be around so my happiness should not solely be on them and the role they play in my life, regardless of the size.
Looking back at my goal now, I truly see that it was unrealistic and unattainable from the start. My goal was idolizing that my life would be perfect and that nothing would go wrong in it, but life will never be like that. You do not experience happiness without hardships. And now I am also coming to terms that happiness is not having everything in life being perfect, throughout life, there are imperfections in yourself, other people, and everything as a whole. And while I continue to try and cultivate this happiness, happiness to me, is the light I have been searching for in this shrouded darkness. To reach this light, I also have to let darkness consume me simultaneously. Relating back to a class discussion in my AP English Language and Composition class, my teacher stated that during the Summer, she is immensely bored and if my class felt the same. I never took it into account seriously but I ended up nodding my head, agreeing with her. She then said that during the school year, you are occupied, you have something that you have to do and should be doing, compared to the summertime where you have all the time at your fingertips but nothing is done with it. I see happiness in that same scope as well. If I did not have to go through any sort of pressure, any struggle to be happy, the pure feeling and value just feels empty, it is not rewarding if I am given it on a silver platter. Or in other words, happiness will not happen if hardships do not happen at the same time. So although Junior year has been majorly unenjoyable for the most part, there are still positives that can be taken from the year as a whole rather than focusing and honing in on the negatives. I know that I am taking all the right steps into the right direction and my efforts will slowly start to be recognized. Happiness is the biggest factor out of my goal but it is safe to say that it is my only goal, at least for the time being. Because I know that as long as I am happy, I can put my mind to anything and accomplish any goals I set out for myself. This is the beauty of searching for light
within darkness.
