Poetry/Essay Contest and more!
Welcome to the first Story Circle of 2026!
We’re starting 2026 strong with a poetry and essay contest and laying the groundwork for new community arts initiatives. Celebrating the work of Black artists is a fitting tribute during Black History Month 2026, which marks a century of national commemorations of Black History.
Arthenia’s Voice
Each month we share from the literary legacy of our inspiration, Dr. Arthenia Jackson Bates Millican. This quote is from her essay, “Autobiography of an Idea,” published 1993 in the African American Review.

Standing Room Only for Multi-Genre Performance at Sumter County Gallery of Art
Carmine Bookhart introduced the event and each performance
Millican Arts partnered with the Sumter High School Speech and Debate Team, the Sumter County Gallery of Art and the Sumter Little Theatre on December 11 to host the multi-genre performance debate event, “Digital Art vs. Traditional Art: What if Winning Doesn’t Matter?”
Eight students performed 10 different pieces that included spoken-word poetry, traditional debates, an excerpt from a Steve Jobs speech and blended “cuttings” from different written works. More than 60 people attended the standing-room only event.
You can watch the entire performance on YouTube here:
YouTube video hosted by Sumter County Gallery of Art
Millican Arts provided each of the students an honorarium for participating as well as a complimentary student membership to Millican Arts. The Sumter Little Theatre gifted the students a free ticket to the performance “Echoes of the Past, Voices of the Future.”
We thank the Sumter County Gallery of Art for its generosity in hosting and co-catering the event and covering printing and mailing costs. We also thank Sumter High Debate Coach Joshua Miller for his tireless dedication in helping students rehearse as well as printing programs.
This event was such a success we plan more partnerships between Millican Arts and the Sumter High School Speech and Debate Team!
Millican House Transformed into Christmas Central for Toys for Tots
Arthenia’s home in Sumter, South Carolina, was a beehive of activity for the month before Christmas as the central location for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign for Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties. Millican Arts Executive Director Rick Jones was also the coordinator for the Marine Corps League Chapter and offered the Millican House as the storage and distribution point.
“Seeing the piles and piles of toys collected took everyone’s breath away,” Rick said.

Over 3,850 toys, books and stocking stuffers were distributed to more than 800 children across Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties through the campaign.
The Foundation thanks Stephanie Bishop from Jackson Hewitt Tax Services and her team of volunteers – along with all the other hard-working volunteers – who accepted applications and spent hours sorting, bagging and distributing toys. It wouldn’t have happened without you.
Actively Seeking Arts Investors and Sponsors
The Foundation is actively soliciting cultural arts investors and sponsors to underwrite Millican Arts 2026 programs and operations. Anticipated events include a poem and essay contest (detailed above), the return of the Millican Arts Festival, other Sumter events and long-awaited renovations of the Millican House, the historically recognized home of Arthenia Bates Jackson Millican.
There are six sponsorship levels for individuals and companies who believe in investing in cultural philanthropy, including an Underserved Community Sponsorship to provide memberships to students and families who might otherwise be unable to participate.

On the Horizon
The Millican Salon is Coming
Millican Arts has made the bold decision to revive the “salon”—historically safe, home-based gatherings where people were free to discuss unpopular ideas. The American Revolution was birthed in Paris salons. We envision Millican Salons to be curated gatherings where stories become bridges across cultural divides, hosted in the tradition of salonnières who changed the world. Our intent is to start local and build global.
We’re planning the first salon for April. If you’re interested in sponsoring, planning, hosting or attending the first Sumter salon, contact Rick at Rick@MillicanArts.org or (704) 942-4130.
